As you ascend the hill north from The Dell you are following the Roman Road that ran from Verulamium to Ickleford (near Hitchin). Wheathampstead lies less than five miles from the third largest city in Roman Britain, Verulamium, located on the south west outskirts of modern St Albans, and you are walking in the footsteps of the Romans on this route. A section of this road was excavated near Herons Farm, west of Mid Herts Golf Course, in 1959.
