According to the Oxford Dictionary of English Place-Names, 'Ayot' means ‘gap or pass of a man named Aega.'

Ayot St Lawrence is one of the most picturesque and historic villages in Hertfordshire. There are many listed buildings, including the Manor House which dates from the 17th century. http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-158268-the-manor-house-ayot-st-lawrence-hertfor

The famous Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw lived in the village from 1906 until his death in 1950. His house, Shaw's Corner, is owned by the National Trust and is open to visitors from March to November.

From 1956, the Georgian Ayot House housed England's only silk farm but it has now moved to Dorset. http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-158266-ayot-house-ayot-st-lawrence-hertfordshir
